International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 – Building back biodiversity

The theme of this year’s Biodiversity Day is “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity” which builds on the results of COP 15.

It is increasingly clear that climate change is a significant cause of biodiversity loss, but biodiversity loss is also driving climate change. As an investor, BNP Paribas Asset Management believes it cannot address one without considering the other in conversations with the companies we invest in and with other investors.

We as a sustainable investor engage with the companies we invest in on stewardship issues such as halting deforestation and tackling water scarcity. Other areas of environmental engagement involve the impact of pesticides on pollinators and the need to protect marine habitats. We support shareholder proposals pushing these topics up the agendas of the companies we invest in.

On a wider scale, we are  working with like-minded investors on engagement focused on improving biodiversity.

Investing in emerging markets, or specialised or restricted sectors is likely to be subject to a higher-than-average volatility due to a high degree of concentration, greater uncertainty because less information is available, there is less liquidity or due to greater sensitivity to changes in market conditions (social, political and economic conditions). Some emerging markets offer less security than the majority of international developed markets. For this reason, services for portfolio transactions, liquidation and conservation on behalf of funds invested in emerging markets may carry greater risk.
