How our approach to sustainability helps investors navigate a changing world

By BNP Paribas Asset Management

The world in which our clients invest is being reshaped by powerful structural forces: environmental pressures, demographic shifts, geopolitical fragmentation and rapid innovation.

The transition to a low carbon world is driving transformation across markets, countries and companies. This is creating new risks, but also potential opportunities, for investors.

These factors shape economies, industries, companies, consumers and communities. They influence capital allocation, asset resilience, operating models and long-term returns. Understanding these dynamics is therefore essential to fulfilling our fiduciary duty and supporting clients in a changing world.

As such, it is crucial that investors can implement forward looking strategies that aim to mitigate non-financial risks and capture emerging opportunities.

At BNP Paribas Asset Management, environmental, social and governance considerations are firmly embedded in our investment processes and grounded in the conviction that traditional financial analysis alone is insufficient to capture the full spectrum of risks and opportunities in today’s global economy.

This conviction is translated into a practical framework for action in our Global Sustainability Strategy – catering for all investment objectives.

What this means for investors

For institutional investors, BNP Paribas Asset Management offers more than just “green” products; we offer a sophisticated investment engine designed for a changing world. By blending thematic foresight, proprietary ESG research and data, and active stewardship, we ensure that sustainability is a key driver of portfolio resilience and long-term financial performance.

Furthermore, our coordinated stewardship, including public policy advocacy, aims to help foster a stable and sustainable economic environment, to protect the long-term value of diversified portfolios.

Forward-looking perspective

We undertake thematic research to identify long-term structural changes and risks as well as potential investment opportunities before they are fully priced by markets.

Sustainability is inherently linked to global megatrends – it acts as a driver of and a necessary response to the transformations occurring across technology, geopolitics, and demographics. Sustainability intersects with these trends to reshape how economies and societies function.

We focus on four global megatrends, which we believe help explain how the world may develop and where risks and opportunities may emerge:

  • Geopolitics: How sovereignty and international cooperation shape market access – here sustainability is increasingly a core element of national security and international diplomacy
  • Environment: Assessing the impact of resource constraints and pollution on asset resilience as sustainability is the fundamental response to environmental degradation
  • Demographics: Evaluating how ageing, inequality and migration shape labour demand and supply – population characteristics and changes in terms of structure and distribution directly impact the scale and nature of sustainability efforts
  • Innovation: Identifying the business models unlocked by technological disruption – technology acts as the primary enabler for sustainability, while simultaneously sustainability goals drive technological research and development

Cutting across these four megatrends are three major sustainability themes which will guide our research going forward:

  • Transition: Financing and enabling the shift to a low-carbon, nature-positive, resilient and inclusive economy
  • Sustainable AI: Assessing how artificial intelligence supports sustainable development while managing its environmental and social impacts
  • One Health: Understanding how human, animal and environmental health underpin long-term economic and investment outcomes

ESG research and due diligence

Our ESG integration is not a separate ‘overlay’ but is embedded directly into the investment decision-making process. Robust data, research excellence and innovative analytics serve as critical foundations of ESG integration.

What differentiates BNPP AM is our combination of quantitative rigour and qualitative insight:

  • Data architecture: We use a multifaceted data set, combining forward-looking and backward-looking metrics, alternative data, and proprietary models to move beyond simplistic ESG scores
  • Investment accountability: Portfolio managers and analysts are directly accountable for ESG integration and must be able to clearly articulate how material ESG factors influence their investment decisions
  • Asset class specificity: We recognise that ESG materiality differs between asset classes, tailoring our methodologies to the specific context of each investment

Stewardship

As a global investor, we view stewardship as a core fiduciary duty that is an essential part of managing risks and aiming to deliver sustainable long-term financial returns for clients.

We employ a coordinated approach combining active voting, targeted engagement with issuers, and public policy advocacy to promote strong ESG standards and drive sustainable economic development and change.

Exclusions

We expect companies to meet their fundamental obligations in terms of human and labour rights. We expect them to protect the environment and ensure anti-corruption safeguards are in place, wherever they operate. Accordingly, we assess companies against internationally recognised norms and standards1 and apply policies tailored to sensitive sectors.

By combining exclusions and engagement, our investment policy supports consistent risk management and encourages issuers to improve practices in areas with material environmental, social and governance risks.

Sustainability-focused products and solutions

Investors face a rapidly evolving regulatory environment as well as a changing market backdrop, so we support our clients with a range of options that aim to translate different sustainability ambitions into robust strategies.

We have over 20 years of experience providing bespoke solutions ranging from customised exclusions to portfolios with highly specific sustainable objectives.

Our comprehensive approach allows us to embed sustainability from the initial research phase through to final client reporting. Our goal is to deliver an end-to-end investment experience to meet our clients’ financial and sustainability-related objectives.

Institutional investors have diverse mandates. BNPP AM provides a scalable range of approaches to meet these varied needs, spanning risk mitigation to measurable impact.

  • Minimum exclusion standards: Baseline safeguards rooted in our Responsible Business Conduct policy for clients seeking standard responsible investment
  • ESG commitment strategies: Strategies with binding ESG exclusions, minimum thresholds, sustainability indicators, or specific targets
  • Decarbonisation and transition strategies: Specialised solutions including Paris-Aligned Benchmarks and net-zero alignment to finance the low-carbon transition
  • Sustainable thematic strategies: Targeted exposure to specific transition themes (e.g., water, energy transition)
  • Impact strategies: Designed to deliver measurable positive environmental or social outcomes alongside financial returns. They are guided by three core principles of intentionality, additionality and impact measurement and reporting

Walking the talk

We aim to maintain high standards in corporate practices and disclosures at both portfolio and corporate levels, underpinned by a strong sustainability culture across our organisation. We embed sustainability into our operations, with a strong focus on educating, engaging and empowering our employees while contributing positively to society.

BNP Paribas Asset Management has entered a new phase of transformation and growth, building on deep investment expertise, extensive capabilities and a conviction that sustainability is central to long-term value creation.

This evolution strengthens our position as a leading European asset manager and reinforces our ability to support clients across public and private markets, regions and investment needs.

Sustainability is fundamental to this ambition. It is embedded in our AMplify 2030 strategy where our objective is to deliver sustainable, resilient outcomes for clients, while contributing positively to the real economy.

Investing in emerging markets, or specialised or restricted sectors is likely to be subject to a higher-than-average volatility due to a high degree of concentration, greater uncertainty because less information is available, there is less liquidity or due to greater sensitivity to changes in market conditions (social, political and economic conditions). Some emerging markets offer less security than the majority of international developed markets. For this reason, services for portfolio transactions, liquidation and conservation on behalf of funds invested in emerging markets may carry greater risk.
